December 2020

I always enjoy photography in December: the low angled light brings out textures, the skies are frequently colourful, the atmosphere still and there are the treasures of frost, snow and inquisitive garden robins.

November 2020

Autumn continued, the first snows appeared on the mountains, geese flew south but the land remained green – the greenest November I can remember.

October 2020

October brought vivid autumn colours and at the end of the month a spectacular sunrise.

September 2020

September was a green and golden month with farmers rushing to do their harvests in between bouts of heavy rain. The grass looked unnaturally green. A highlight was a spitfire aircraft fly by to thank the NHS for their work.

August 2020

August was a month of golden fields, purple heather, flowers, seeds and fruits, blue sky and sun. It was also often wet with clouds and mist forming on the land.

Comet Neowise was visible in July

Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) is a long period comet with a near parabolic orbit discovered on March 27th 2020 by astronomers using the Near Earth Orbit Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer space telescope. It survived its fly by the sun and could be seen in July – clouds permitting! We managed faint sightings on 3 nights and also saw noctilucent clouds beyond Perth.

Meikleour Beech Hedge

This giant row of trimmed beech trees which lies ten miles north of Perth on the A93 is officially recognised as the tallest and longest hedge on earth. It was planted in 1745 and is now 530m long and 100ft high. Every ten years or so it is given a hard prune which takes four men around six weeks using a hydraulic lift and hand held cutting tools. This was last done in November 2019 so the bare branches of the hedge are very visible this winter.
