Iceland – Gullfoss

Gullfoss (golden falls) is located in the canyon of the Hvita river in southwest Iceland.  Last century it was in danger of being used for hydro electricity but this never happened due to lack of funding.  Sigridur Thomasdottir, the land owners daughter, promoted Gullfoss as a tourist attraction and was opposed to the hydro development. Today she is regarded as one of Iceland’s first environmentalists and has a memorial plaque overlooking the falls.
