Aerial photography – Greece, Santorini

The island of Santorini was devastated by a huge volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC and what is left today is an incomplete circle of land round a submerged crater with an active volcano in the centre. The airport lies on flat land beneath a mountain where the ancient capital Thira was sited. Flying into the island we skirted the mountain and had a good view of the road up to Thira. Flying out we headed north over the bulk of present day Santorini and had clear views of the active volcano and the neighbouring island of Thirasia which is largely undeveloped.
